Digital Music Market

The UK’s digital music market is developing at breakneck pace, with new business models delivering impressive improvements in digital revenues. Research from the latest BPI Statistical handbook show that

- 10% of the population bought some form of digital music in 2008, up from 5% in 2007

- 10 m digital albums were sold in 2008, a 65% increase on 2007.

- 110 m single tracks were downloaded in 2008, a 42% increase on 2007 and digital tracks now account for 95% of the market, up from 90% in 2007.

Music Industry Workforce Statistics

A total of 102,210 individuals are employed in the UK Music Industry, with Live Performance accounting for the greatest proportion (50,780). Overall, employment in Music between 2006 and 2008 increased by a total of 8%

88% for the Music workforce are in England and a quarter of all people working in Music do so in London. 6% work in Scotland, 4% in Wales and 2% in Northern Ireland.

When it comes to qualifications, 40% of people working in Music have at least a level 4 qualifications (equivalent to two or more A Levels). In contrast, nearly 1 in 10 have no qualifications.
