Guide to Work Descriptions

The following 'maps' of the four principle areas of the music industry have been assembled in response to requests from MED users who require more information. The research was conducted with the help of those currently working in each area and consequently represents an overview.

While each individual company in the record industry operates in a different way each map can be read as a flow chart of steps or functions which must be performed to achieve each outcome i.e. record release, live performance etc.

The work descriptions match the boxes on the maps. Each box/description should be read as a function.

In a small company several functions could make up one person's work (i.e. in a small record company one person might well handle A&R, marketing and also be the MD), whereas in a large company each function may be performed by a large group of people (e.g. a business affairs/legal team within in a multi-national publishing company could be 5 persons or more).

Each function is essential to the operation of the company concerned and the maps consequently represent a guide to the different possible types of work available within the organisations which make up the music industry.
